Joyce Lorraine Remmel, 88, formerly of Hollywood, Maryland died June 12, 2020 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Gayle Remmel Bonasorte and Joe Bonasorte, in Parrish, Florida. Joyce was under the home care of Tidewell Hospice for complications from dementia. Born March 30, 1932 in Washington, DC she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Lena Joy. She was the loving wife of the late Robert “Bob” Remmel, whom she married on June 11, 1950 in the Hollywood United Methodist Church. In addition to being survived by her daughter and son-in-law, she is also survived by her son, Barry Nelson Remmel of Ponce deLeon, Florida, her sister, Juanita Buchanan of Hollywood, Maryland, her brothers, Elwood Joy (Marge) of Hollywood, Maryland and Arnold Joy (Loretta) of Williamsport, Maryland. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Lois Windham of Spring, Texas, Austin Remmel of Mt. Washington, Maryland, Rebecca Windsor (Joey) of Dameron, Maryland, Corey Bonasorte (Stephanie) of Belmont, California, Leah Burke (Sean) of Woodstock, Maryland and Douglas Remmel of Ponce deLeon, Florida, as well as great-grandchildren Amaya Remmel, Lilly Remmel, MacKenzie Windsor, Alexander Tink, Joshua Tink, Alexandra Burke and Grace Burke, and many nieces and nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her sisters Eunice Gatton and Mildred Crichfield, and her brothers Herbert Joy, Marion Joy and Marvin Joy. A long-time resident of Hollywood, Maryland, Joyce was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and dear friend. But she also had a profound impact on the lives of hundreds of students in the St. Mary’s County Public School System as a Food Services Teacher at the St. Mary’s County Technical Center. In all, she spent 50 years working in the school system and built a lasting legacy as an extraordinary mentor to so many who went on to successful careers in food service. Not a restaurant or store visit would go by, almost anywhere in St. Mary’s County, without a happy reunion with one of her former students. After 21 years teaching food service full time, she continued to teach as a substitute for another 19 years until 2010 when she retired for good. She turned her attention to the joys of her family, many friends, dear neighbors, love of gardening and genealogy, and her precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for her famous cream puffs and always had people lining up at the annual Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department dinner. Joyce was a life-long member of the Hollywood United Methodist Church and a volunteer for numerous church activities. She was also a member of the Julia Halla Chapter #107, Order of the Eastern Star. 2. Gayle, Joe and the Remmel Family,
Sorry for your loss of Mrs. Remmel. I know the family will miss her dearly. You will always have those wonderful memories of her that can’t be taken away and one day you will be reunited. Keeping Mrs. Remmel and her family in my prayers. God Bless you all.

  3. Gayle, Barry, and families: I am so sorry to learn the news about Joyce. I had the pleasure of knowing her and working with her for many years in different job situations in the school system. This friendship extended outside the work place. I know that she is at peace in the hands of her God.

  4. Gayle, Barry and family; I’m sending heartfelt condolences and am praying for comfort in your hurting hearts. I’ve known your mom seemingly forever, having grown up on Joy Lane in Hollywood with you. Through all of the years, I hold only find memories of Mrs. Remmel. Days of worshipping together at HUMC; of activities for the Lodge, and of course days in the neighborhood with sweet Brownie start my list of fond memories. When I would visit my folks, through their declining health, she would often see my car and stop to chat and encourage me. I remember the day my dad passed away in 2002, and within hours, she arrived at my house with a still-warm-from-the-oven pineapple upside down cake. I recall volunteering at the annual RSVP luncheon held at the Forrest Center ( St. Mary’s County Career Center) and Mrs. Remmel was filling in, leading the students flawlessly through lunch service for 160 Senior Volunteers. She took time out to come and hug me, as she did every time I saw her. She was a wonderful energy in Hollywood throughout the years. Thinking of her sharing her now heavenly energy makes my heart happy. I will look for the date of her memorial service.

  5. Dear Gayle,

  7. Ed and Donna Fitzgerald says:

Our condolences on the passing of Joyce. She has a special place in our hearts, both as a friend and a colleague. My years working with her at the Tech Center showed me her great love and affection for her students in the Food Service Program. Although she retired while I was there, she somehow or another always showed back up to spend time with the faculty and students. She was indeed a special person. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

  8. I am so sorry to hear of Joyce’s passing. I worked at St. john’s Pharmacy in Hollywood, MD for many years. Ms.Remmel was one of the most beloved customers we had.
