Dr. Kathleen Heffernan WachApril 20, 1937 – June 30, 2014University Administrator, Foreign Service Spouse, Teacher Dr. Kathleen Barbara Grattan Heffernan Wach, 77, who was formerly Director of Residence Hall Operations at Georgetown University and served on the Board of Education for the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, died of Alzheimer’s disease at home in Springfield, Virginia, on June 30, 2014. Dr. Wach was born in Long Beach, California, but moved to the Georgetown neighborhood in Washington, D.C., immediately after World War II with her parents, Admiral John B. Heffernan (USN) and Patricia Grattan Esmonde Heffernan. She was a descendant of Henry Grattan, a leader of Irish home-rule efforts in the late 1700s, and her grandfather, Sir Thomas Esmonde, was a member of the British House of Commons and then a founding member of the Irish Dail (parliament) after Ireland achieved its independence in 1921. Dr. Wach attended Holy Trinity School, Georgetown Visitation High School, and Georgetown University, where in 1959 she was a member of the first graduating class of Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service to include women. In 1960 she married Raymond J. Wach, a diplomat for the U.S. State Department. Together they had six children and traveled to his postings at U.S. Embassies in Germany, Denmark, Nigeria, and Sudan. She and her husband also served as foster parents in Washington, D.C., and hosted children and teenagers, formally and informally, for extended periods. As a result of friends they had made overseas, particularly from Nigeria during the Biafran War, and in Sudan, their home in Washington became a meeting place for immigrants and visitors from overseas. In 1980 she began working at Georgetown University in a secretarial position, and eventually became its Director of Residence Hall Operations, responsible for the management of student dormitories, and was a member of Georgetown’s Choir. She also earned a Doctorate in Ministry from Catholic University, and served on the Board of Education of the Washington, D.C., Catholic Archdiocese. She was a parishioner at Annunciation Parish in Washington, D.C., and after her retirement in 1998 to Leonardtown, Maryland, she became a parishioner at Our Lady’s Church in Leonardtown. During her retirement, she taught at St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonardtown, and received a “Master Gardener” certification. Her husband died in 2003, and in 2007 her Alzheimer’s disease required her to move to Washington, D.C., and then to Springfield, Virginia, to be cared for by her children.
