Mary Kathy Downs, “Sissy”, 61, of Mechanicsville, MD passed away on June 9, 2020 at her residence. She was born on May 7, 1959 in Leonardtown, MD and was the daughter of the late Mary Emma Downs and Preston Joseph Downs. Sissy is survived by her children April Gray of Lexington Park, MD and Ashley Gray of California, MD, grandchildren, Kayla Baird, Kasey Phipps, Leland Payne, Jayden Payne, Aubree Phipps, and Michael Gray. Siblings Ronald Downs (Sharon) of Mechanicsville, MD, Albert Lee Downs (Faye) of Mechanicsville, MD, Preston Downs (Joyce) of Mechanicsville, MD, Diane Derrick (Ronnie), of Westminister, SC, Emma Raley (Wayne) of Mechanicsville, MD, Jerry Downs (Katina) of Mechanicsville, MD, and Herman Downs (Cyndi), of Mechanicsville, MD. She was a lifelong St. Mary’s County, Maryland resident and graduated Chopticon High School in 1976. Sissy worked for B & B Imaging from 1987 until 1994, then Merkle Mailing from 1994 until 2003, she then went to work for St. Mary’s Hospital from 2003 until 2014. Sissy loved her family, and spending time with her grandchildren, and her best friend Vivian. She enjoyed picking and eating crabs, canning and playing cards (pitch and pass the trash) . Sissy also enjoyed playing horseshoes which she did for many years, she also played in many tournaments. All Funeral Services will be private at this time. Serving as pallbearers will be Brandon Long, Jason Derrick, Korey Downs, Robert Derrick, Kyle Downs, and Michael Raley Contributions can be made to the Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 15, Mechanicsville, MD 20659 or to Hospice of St. Mary’s, PO Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Arrangements provided by the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, P.A. Leonardtown, MD.

  1. Ronnie,Emma,Lee and Family. So sorry for the passing of Sissy. She was such a sweet lady, stopping and talking to us when ever we saw her. She would always come in to see how momma Rose was doing when she was in the hospital. Saying prayers for the family and friends.

My Dear Sister In Law..We will miss you girl,and I know your brothers will as well now they don’t have anyone to pick on..you had a big heart and you lived for your daughters and family and put them first you always thought of them when you made your pickles,salsa doing summer time canning, so many good times playing cards, eating crabs or just sitting around..You fought a hard and brave battle and Heaven has gained another Angel.You will be missed by all and we will cherish your memories. “Rest In Peace Sissy” Love ya

  5. April and Ashley, I am so very sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I fondly remember all of you from your days at St. John’s. Sissy and I chatted quite a few times when I would be visiting in the hospital. I wish both of you well.

  8. My condolences to the family. Sissy and I were good friends for many years. We shared a love for steamed shrimp and the Dallas Cowboys. I was with Sissy when she was first diagnosed with cancer. We were both devastated. She fought it relentlessly. Her main concern was her two daughters and her six grandchildren. She loved them all dearly. Sissy is now in a better place, free of sickness and pain. She will be missed by all. May she rest in peace.

    Aunt sissy we will miss you so much the only thing I can get out of this is that you are hopefully now you are in peace and not in any more pain you haven’t had it easy I have such great memories with you as far as back when you used to babysit me and the old Johnny Wood store while you were making crab pots you loved your family so much and they love you rest in peace until we meet again give Pop and maw maw a big hug and kiss and tell Pop I miss him so much…

  11. To all of Sissy’s family. I was so sad to hear of Sissy’s passing. You guys may remember me, I lived next door to your family in Mechanicsville. I remember your Mom and Dad, and all of you kids. I just wanted you know that I was very fond of you all. I know that Sissy fought a very hard battle. But, she is now at peace and suffers no more. Love to each and everyone of you and don’t forget those fond memories, hold on to them.

  13. Sincere condolences to Sissy’s family. I lived next to Sissy in the Apartments on Morgan Road in Hollywood back in the 1980’s. We shared a lot of laughs both for good times and bad. Sissy was the best neighbor. I do recall how fond she was of canning, especially pickling. I was always happy to run into her out and about so we could catch up. She loved her girls very much. You have a special angel watching over you now. Rest in peace Sissy!
