Matthew William Quade

matthew quade

January 14, 1929 ~ March 1, 2024

Matthew was born on January 14, 1929, at Bushwood Lodge to James Carroll Sr. and Grace Irene Lacey Quade. He attended Sacred Heart School, and he was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church. He married Elizabeth Ann Hall on March 26, 1951, and they were together for almost 73 years. Matthew is survived by four sons: Matt, Greg, Danny (Lisa) and Andy. His daughter Grace Ann (and her husband Dickie Duke), his daughter-in-law Rosemary and two grandchildren preceded him in death. He has nine other grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Matthew is also survived by his sister Agnes Pilkerton (Melvin) and his sisters-in-law Frances Lee and Ginny. His other siblings were Roy (Mary), James Maguire, Joe (Eleanor), Mary Catherine Wathen (Elwood), Dorothy (Popeye), James Carroll (Frances Lee), Thelma Hall (Tink), Bernie (Anna Marie) and Frankie (Ginny). For most of his life, Matthew worked on the farm where he was born. He also worked many other jobs, including oysterman, elections judge, barn builder and mailman. He stopped farming to work at the Morgantown PEPCO plant in 1987 until his retirement in 2002. He liked playing cards, attending BYOB dances, eating oysters and crabs, and family vacations to Marshall Hall and to Ocean City. He enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s ball games. He also enjoyed family get togethers, particularly with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Matthew never sat still for very long, always finding something that needed doing (and making sure it was done just right). To him, being on time meant being fifteen minutes early. He was always willing to lend a hand on neighbors’ farms, at church dinners, and wherever else he was needed. He was friendly and had a big smile for everyone. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ACTS (P.O. Box 54, Bushwood MD 20618), the Seventh District Volunteer Rescue Squad (P.O. Box 7, Avenue MD 20619) or Sacred Heart Church (P.O. Box 37, Bushwood, MD 20618).
