In Loving Memory of Shirley Faye (Guy) Wood
September 21, 1944 – November 13, 2025
Shirley, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 13, 2025. She will be remembered as a beautiful soul — kind, gentle, devoted to her family, and compassionate to all she met. Her legacy of love, strength, and grace will live on in every heart she touched.
Born on September 21, 1944, in Leonardtown, MD, Shirley was the daughter of the late William Leonard and Margaret Cornelia (Bowles) Guy. She was the devoted wife of Hamilton E. “Bubba” Wood, Sr. with whom she shared sixty-four years of marriage. Together, they built a beautiful life and a family filled with love.
Shirley devoted herself to raising her children until her youngest entered school. At that time, she began her second career in the St. Mary’s County Public School System, Food Services Department. She worked at several schools and eventually became the Food Service Manager at Oakville Elementary School until her retirement in 2010. “Ms. Wood” as the children called her, cared deeply for the students and treated every child with love and kindness.
She had a passion for gardening and spent countless hours creating and tending to her beautiful gardens. She cherished camping trips with family and friends and never passed up a chance to “pull the handle” or scratch a ticket in hopes of winning a few coins. In her earlier years, she enjoyed softball, bowling, and was always ready for a good game of Pitch. Above all, her greatest joy in life was simply being with her family.
Shirley’s memory will be cherished by - her children, Hamilton E. “Tony” (Sandra) Wood Jr., William F. “Billy” (Cathy) Wood, and Deborah F. “Debbie” (Timmy) May; her grandchildren, Kyle (Brittani) Wood, Melaney (Vince) LoPiccolo, Kourtney (Billy) Rabbitt, Corey (Erica) Wood, Derrick (Leah) May, Kaitlyn Wood (Brad Sullivan), and Jeremy May (Shannon Hill); and her great grandchildren, Kayleigh, Kaiden, Kinsley, Kashton, Kamden, Wesley, Emma, and another great granddaughter soon to arrive, all who lovingly called her “Maw” and brought her endless smiles and joy. She also leaves behind her siblings: Margaret Ann (predeceased Leonard) Harding and William Leonard (Betty Jean) Guy.
The family will receive friends for visitation on November 20, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, 41590 Fenwick Street, Leonardtown, MD 20650. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on November 21, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Church, 28297 Old Village Road, Mechanicsville, MD, 20659 with interment to follow at Mt. Zion Methodist Church, 27108 Mt. Zion Church Road, Mechanicsville, MD 20659.
Serving as pallbearers will be Kyle Wood, Corey Wood, Derrick May, Jeremy May, Billy Rabbitt and Vince LoPiccolo. Honorary pallbearers will include her granddaughters: Melaney LoPiccolo, Kourtney Rabbitt, Kaitlyn Wood, great grandchildren: Kayleigh Rabbitt, Kaiden Wood, Kinsley Rabbitt, along with Brittani Wood, Erica Wood, Leah May, Shannon Hill and Brad Sullivan.
Memorial donations may be made in Shirley’s name to ACTS - A Community That Shares, Mechanicsville Rescue Squad or American Cancer Society.
May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her love continue to shine through the lives of those she so deeply cherished.
