August 13, 1929 ~ March 15, 2016

Susan “Sue” Gertrude (Dean) Gibson, 86, of Bushwood, MD, passed away surrounded by her loving family on March 15, 2016 in Callaway, MD. Born on August 13, 1929 in Dynard, MD, she was the daughter of the late Agnes Loretta (Hall) Dean and James Levi Dean. Sue was the loving wife of James Henry Gibson whom she married in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Bushwood, MD on September 6, 1948. Sue is survived by her siblings; Sylvia Marie Lacey of Chaptico, MD, and Francis Ethelbert Dean of Bushwood, MD. She was preceded in death by her brothers; James Aloysius Dean and Joseph Lenox Dean. Sue was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, MD and received her GED in 1982. She worked as a manger/sales clerk for Fashion Center for 10 years and Ben Franklin for 37 years, retiring in 1990 after 47 years. After her first love, her husband Jim, Sue loved helping to take care of Sacred Heart Church. Starting in the late 1950’s, she assisted in coordinating the June and October dinners which were the major fundraisers for the church and started helping arrange the alter flowers. Because of her skills, when time came to pass on the leadership for both these activities, she was chosen to take the lead. She helped coordinated dinners for over 20 years, and was involved with the alter arrangements for more than 50 years, recruiting others to help with providing flowers from their gardens, making arrangements for the side alters and making sure that there were arrangements from the florist on the main alter. Before or after daily mass, she would ensure that the arrangements were watered to make sure they stayed fresh. She also laundered the alter linens at home on a regular basis, washing and ironing them with care. Sue once said, if our car has 99,000 miles on it, I’d bet 90,000 would have been driving back and forth to Sacred Heart. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 21, 2016 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 10:00 AM in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Bushwood, MD with Father Anthony Lickteig officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be: J.D. Lacey, Patrick Goode, Malcolm Goode, Jamie Dean, Joey Dean, and Jack Williams. Honorary Pallbearers will be Michael Dean.
