Ronald "Wayne" Wood, 65 of Mechanicsville, MD passed away on June 15, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. Born on March 15, 1950 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Doris Long Wood and the late Herman O. Wood, Jr. Wayne was the loving husband of Marilyn Raley Wood, whom he married at Immaculate Conception Church in Mechanicsville on May 23, 1970. Together they celebrated 45 wonderful years together. Wayne is also survived by his 3 daughters Jenny (Jim) Gray, Vickie (Josh) Stinnett and Valerie (Pat) Matheny, all of Mechanicsville, MD as well as grandchildren Lindsey Gray, Kyle Gray and Baby Girl Matheny to arrive in October. His siblings are Bobby (Dawn) Wood of Hollywood, MD, June (John) Bateman of Mechanicsville, MD, Lenny (Kitten) Wood of Leonardtown, MD, Lisa Warnos of Loveville, MD and Steve (Jill) Wood of California, MD. Wayne graduated from Chopticon High School in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army from 1970-1972. Wayne retired from civil service at the Naval Air Warfare Center, Patuxent River, MD after 40 years as an Engineering Technician.
Wayne was a talented musician. His love of music started in his teenage years when he learned to play the guitar and later played the bass guitar with many local bands. The most memorable was Harmony Band with whom he played and entertained with for many years. Wayne enjoyed watching NASCAR, working in his garage, and playing guitar and singing with his grandchildren. His love for his three daughter’s and grandchildren showed every day of his life by enjoying every family gathering to the fullest and taking family vacations. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 18, 2015 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM with prayers recited at 7:00PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 19, 2015 at 10:00Am in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Father Michael Tietjen officiating. Interment will follow in Queen of Peace cemetery, Helen, MD. Pallbearers are Bobby Wood, Lenny Wood, Steve Wood, Leroy Buckler, Ricky Guy and Jeffrey Raley, Sr.

I won’t be at the prayers or funeral because of another funeral. I just wanted you to know that I remember Wayne or I should say(Sneader) as we called him in Chopticon. He was funny and a great guy. Haven’t seen him in recent years. A great loss for your family I know. My sincere sympathy.

Marilyn and daughters, I am so sad for you all. He was a wonderful person, full of wit. I loved to hear him laugh. I have great memories of our childhood fun together and then double dating in high school. If there is anything I can do, don’t hesitate to call on me. All my love to each of you.

Dear Marilyn, girls, and grandkids. We are so saddened at the loss of Wayne. He was one of the nicest, kindest, and one of a kind person/friend anyone could ever hope to meet in this life. All of our years together in Harmony Band will always leave of cherished memories of him. He will always be “Lee WayneWood” to us. We know he is at peace with our Lord in Heaven and one day we will be all reunited and get the old band together back in Heaven. We will keep you all in our prayers.

Marilyn and family. We are very sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. He was for sure a one of kind person that we had the privilege of knowing. He was a dear friend to us both and I enjoyed playing music with him in the Harmony Band back in the day. Not only was he a very talented musician but a great person. We had a lot of laughs and made some great memories that I, we will always cherish! May God give you all the comfort and peace you need during this difficult time. Wayne was like a brother to me. I will always cherish the times we shared as kids..riding bikes, playing in the fields, and spending so much time at our grandparents house. My sincere condolences to all the family.

Very Sorry to Hear about the passing of Wayne. He was one of the nicest people I’ve ever known … always had that smile for you. Couldn’t quite teach me how to play guitar because I didn’t have his extraordinary Talent !! Sorry to hear of Wayne passing. He is now at peace, no more worries, no more pain. He was such a nice person and I thought alot of him although the only time I saw him was at funerals and wedding.
