William “Bill” Edward Scarafia, 67, died Monday, October 24, 2016 at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC following surgery. Bill leaves behind his son, James Scarafia, his daughter, Kristen (Mike) Brown, his brother, Paul (Sharleen) Scarafia, his sister, Judy (Dean) Murphy, and four grandchildren. Bill was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, the son of the late William and Eileen Scarafia, and graduated from Empire State College in Buffalo. He had three jobs in his life. The first was for 18 years as a manager at MPS, Inc. in Buffalo. Bill then became the Executive Director of the Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce in Cheektowaga, NY, leaving that position in 2002 to become President/CEO of the St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce. In 2008, Bill was named as Maryland Chamber of Commerce Executive of the Year. He retired from the St. Mary’s Chamber in June 2016. Bill had a deep love for St. Mary’s County, but he also had a great passion for theater. He was a former president of The Newtowne Players in Lexington Park, MD and was involved in every aspect of NTP—onstage, backstage, and in leadership roles. The family will receive friends at Mattingly-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD, at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2016, followed by a memorial service at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Bill’s name to The Newtowne Players, PO Box 1491, Lexington Park, MD 20653.

  1. I am so sorry to hear about Bill’s passing. He was a tremendous person who always had a smile. I counted on his council and friendship. I wish your family love and healing as we all deal with Bill’s passing. You are all in my prayers. Sincerely, Deb

  2. Thank you for all you did for The Newtowne Players. You will be missed.

  3. Such a great loss. Bill touched lives everywhere he went. He was the kind, wise and a pleasure to be around. It was my pleasure to meet and work with him in multiple environments as the frazzled leader, pulled in every direction but able to maintain composure with the St. Mary’s Chamber of Commerce, and as a kind and giving, joy to be around at The Newtowne Players. Bill is such a great man and an inspiration to all. Thank you, so much for all you have done.

  4. Dawn and Kelly Weber says:

Bill was such a lovely person and a true gentleman. He was my friend for many years and generously donated his time, talents, and resources to causes he believed in. His untimely passing will leave us sadder at Newtowne. We were blessed to have him with us.
My sincere condolences to his family who he loved so much.

  5. It is hard to imagine not seeing Bill walk through the doors at NTP. His patience and knowledge was always appreciated. His example of loyalty and dedication is one to be followed. Our friendship was too short and it will be greatly missed. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family.

  6. Bill was a great friend to us personally and in our professional lives. He was the same person no matter what the situation – smart, insightful, fun-loving and a force to be reckoned with! He made our stand-up at the airport much easier and integrated us into the community there quickly. We will miss his enthusiastic support of the arts, and his warm smile.

On behalf of the team at the UMD UAS Test Site, our prayers go out to his friends and family. He will be missed.

  7. I was so sad to read of Bill’s passing. For many years he supported the Lions Leadership Institute in upstate New York with his great insight. I always enjoyed learning something new every time he taught a class. He was so generous with his time even traveling back from Maryland to teach. I shall miss him deeply.
